Hello you,
long long I didn’t
write anything and even though all my required courses since last Friday are
over. The week
before was stressful and then there was Vappu.
Vappu is a big
party in Finland. On
30 of April and it is something like the beginning of spring or "welcome
the summer". But
you can certainly also compare it with a day like carnival, but not as
wonderful as in Cologne. :
)
Students dress
up, build a kind of soapbox and have to solve various tasks in teams. As
a conclusion of this rally, here in Seinäjoki, the statue at the station is
washed by them. After
that they’re all going to the “College beach” together, where it is celebrated.
Of
course in a Finnish way of celebrate, and thus in a mobile sauna with a Jacuzzi.
At least some of Finns enjoyed
a beer or two in there.
At Vappu I
actually noticed for the first time, that the days getting longer and the
nights are getting shorter. When
we were leaving the disco at 3 o’clock in the morning, the birds were singing
already. At 4 am the sun was
raising.
Now it is almost
bright until 11 pm. Official sunrise is at 04.51 o’clock. Sunset is at 22.01 o’clock. However,
you know how it is; light it is still there, even if you cannot see the sun.
At least the day
is getting longer for 7 minutes every day. That's
pretty much,compared to Cologne, where there is only a scarce two minutes more
per day. Even
at the temperatures it becomes apparent that it is summer. Yes, you read correctly. Summer. Without spring. After
all, we have learned from the Finns that in Finland, there is actually no
spring. There
is winter where socks, shoes and a jacket are worn and there is the summer. Since the Finn are wearing
Crogs without socks and t-shirt. So
for anyone who is cold at 17 * C in Germany trying to explain this to a Finn. :)
I have a few
pictures of Vappu, the sunrise at 4 clock in the morning and of course the
wonderful "Finnish Summer," which I will attach to this entry.
Otherwise, enjoy the
wonderful weather and eat an ice cream for me.
